Nick Walker - Sales Representative, Fluoropolymers
Nick Walker, one of Arkema Inc.'s first Developmental Sales Program graduates, provides insight into his time as a sales representative for Arkema Inc.'s fluoropolymers division.
What are your day-to-day responsibilities?
I am responsible for sales representation of accounts within my region for the fluoropolymers division. My region is essentially anything west of the Mississippi River. I service existing resin buying accounts, follow up on new leads, and make end use calls to help specify Kynar® by name (Kynar® is Arkema’s trade name for PVDF resin). My job includes frequent travel within my region.
What did you do before joining Arkema Inc.?
Before joining Arkema, I was a student at Florida State University. I majored in professional sales and hospitality management. While at Florida State I was a member of the Florida State Sales Team. The sales team is a competitive team comprised of the top 10% of students within the major. I was able to find out about Arkema though the lead professor of my major.
What is a major accomplishment you are most proud of?
My greatest work accomplishment would be transitioning into the role that I am in now. I came into the company through the Developmental Sales Program and stayed full time with the fluoropolymers group. In 1 years’ time I was able to take control of all of the western accounts for the fluoropolymers group.
Why did you apply for a job at Arkema Inc.?
I applied for the job at Arkema because it fit what I was looking for. The Developmental Sales Program provided extensive training and invested in me as an employee. Sales at Arkema are B to B industrial sales, and that fit my personality very well.
How do you see your future at Arkema Inc.?
I see my future at Arkema much like the 6 month rotation I went through. There will be challenging times, rewarding times, and times for growth.
In your opinion, what are the main qualities that you need to grow your career at Arkema Inc.?
Willingness to learn, ability to think outside the box and compatibility with your coworkers.
What advice would you give to anyone who wanted to work for Arkema Inc.?
If someone wanted to work for Arkema, I would advise them to do their research on the industry prior to applying. It is a very different industry than your typical business to consumer industry. That being said it is a very rewarding industry.
What are some of the highlights of working at Arkema Inc.?
Major highlights in my position are the opportunities that come with traveling for work. For instance one week I may be in Portland, Oregon seeing customers and the next week I could be a trade show in Las Vegas, Nevada. The excitement of travel keeps the weeks and months flying by.
How would you describe Arkema Inc. in one sentence?
Arkema is the best company that no one has heard about!
