Bostik, the adhesive solutions business line of the Arkema group, and Ontex, a leading international personal hygiene group, has donated over one million feminine hygiene products to support education for girls in Zambia. Two containers each filled with 507,000 packets of feminine hygiene products and shipped by Ontex docked in Lusaka (Zambia) on April 25th.
The American Chemistry Council (ACC) has honored Arkema’s Calvert City, Kentucky plant with its prestigious Energy Efficiency Award, adding an “Exceptional Merit” designation. According to ACC, this honor recognizes broad programs to achieve energy-efficiency improvements. Arkema Inc. won the award with “Exceptional Merit” in 2019 as well, for its corporate ArkEnergy program.

At the online JEC innovation awards ceremony, which took place today, Arkema was twice awarded with its partners for two major innovations in thermoplastic composites for aeronautics and railway applications.
Arkema Inc. contributed hand sanitizer solution to the New York State Office of Emergency Management, Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency, Texas Division of Emergency Management and Tennessee Emergency Management Agency. It is meant for distribution to health organizations in areas that have been hard hit by COVID-19.
The company repurposed a production line at its plant in Geneseo, N.Y. to manufacture 10,000 gallons – enough to fill 110,000 12 oz. bottles – of hand sanitizer solution. This solution, made with the company’s own hydrogen peroxide, was donated to New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Texas, in which the company has key operations. Brenntag and ExxonMobil helped make this possible.
The Group’s results are in line with expectations, in a first quarter marked by the coronavirus outbreak in Asia and its spread to Europe in March. Stripping out the coronavirus impact, the Group’s performance, in a less favorable economic environment than in 2019, was supported by the resilience of Specialty Materials and, in particular, strong growth of the Adhesive Solutions segment. Moreover, the balance sheet and liquidity levels remain very solid.
The current health crisis spares nobody, and every single company is impacted to some degree. Initiated last year by the Arkema Group and the Lalou Multi team, the construction of the new Multi50 Arkema 4 in Verdon-sur-Mer has also felt the fall-out from this crisis: loss of staff, problems in procuring materials, and sanitary measures put in place on a construction site where over 20 people would normally be working. Despite the delay, the construction and assembly of the new trimaran are making steady progress, and the launch of this new machine, under the watchful eye of Quentin Vlamynck, has been rescheduled for July 2020.

Quentin is fully aware of this opportunity and of the hopes vested in him, and he also knows that he can count on the expertise of his mentor, Lalou Roucayrol, and on the many skills of the Arkema Group and the Lalou Multi sailing team. Plenty to look forward to throughout two seasons in the run-up to the legendary Route du Rhum solo race in late 2022.

On January 23, 2020, Arkema Inc. filed a petition seeking relief under U.S. antidumping duty laws from unfairly traded imports of R-32 from China. It was with huge relief that Raphaël Lutard moored his Mini 6.50 Arkema 3 in the port of Le Marin in Martinique late yesterday, after 18 days 04 hours 09 minutes and 58 seconds sailing solo, in the second leg of the Mini Transat – La Boulangère 2019 race. Plagued by technical glitches throughout the voyage, the 24-year old skipper showed incredible determination and great maturity over the 2,700 mile course between Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands and Martinique. After clutching 8th place in the first leg, Raphaël truly stepped up to the plate for his very first solo transatlantic crossing.

Sartomer, a business unit of Arkema, has earned special recognition at its Chatham, Va. plant. Initiated in September 2018, the construction of the new Multi50 Arkema 4 is progressing on schedule, and the first components are taking shape in the new infrastructures of the Lalou Multi shipyard in Verdon-sur-Mer (33). Designed by Romaric Neyhousser in close cooperation with Lalou Roucayrol and the future skipper Quentin Vlamynck, this latest generation trimaran will have different architectural lines from its predecessor. It will be more versatile, and also benefit from ergonomics adapted to its skipper and focused on performance. Another major asset: just like the Mini 6.50 Arkema 3, it will incorporate innovative solutions drawn from collaboration between the Research & Development and Business hubs of the Arkema Group and Lalou Multi. This prototype is due to be launched in spring 2020.

Initially scheduled for 22 September, the start of the Mini Transat - La Boulangère race has had to be deferred several times due to complex weather conditions jeopardizing the competitors’ safety. After three successive postponements and a 15-day wait, the start of this solo transatlantic race is at last looming large for the young 23 year old skipper Raphaël Lutard and his innovative prototype, the Mini 6.50 Arkema 3. So, at 10.30 h on Saturday 5 October, the competitors will be setting off to tackle the first leg of their race: a 1,400 nautical mile course between La Rochelle and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Among the superyachts at the 28th Monaco Yacht Show in Monte-Carlo this 25-28 September, Bayonne-based LOEVA will present a perfectly transparent stand-up paddle. This SUP allows paddlers to glide over the surface of the waves while admiring the underwater universe by day or by night. Ultra performing PAEK (polyaryl ether ketone) resins are typically not easily thermoformed in thick gauge semi-crystalline form. Effective as of October 1st 2019, or as contract terms allow, Arkema will raise price for its hydrogen peroxide range by 30 €/DMT and for its sodium chlorate by 30€/MT in Europe and for the export markets. These prices adjustments are necessary to cover increasing electricity and labor costs.

Arkema announces a project for Bostik to acquire Prochimir, a company specializing in high performance thermobonding adhesive films. This acquisition would enable Bostik to broaden its offering of solvent-free thermobonding solutions earmarked for many fast-growing industrial applications in the automotive, construction, textile and medical markets. It would position Bostik among world-leading players in thermobonding films, and is part of Bostik’s strategy to expand through acquisitions targeting leading technologies in a market that remains fragmented.
Arkema today announced that, effective October 1, 2019, the company will be consolidating its distribution network in the southern half of the United States for CRAYVALLAC® Additives. Palmer Holland will be responsible for distribution in the southeastern and Peninsula Polymers will be responsible for the southwestern states. CRAYVALLAC® Additives are used across many different applications, including industrial and protective coatings.

The construction of the Multi 50 Arkema 4 announced last year by Arkema and Lalou Multi is well underway. Designed by marine architect Romaric Neyhousser, this innovative trimaran will be skippered by Quentin Vlamynck under the watchful eye of Lalou Roucayrol who manages the project and takes on the role of coach. The three men disclose the rationale of the boat and review the progress of its construction, the boat’s launch being scheduled for Spring 2020.
